Why is it that parents do not nurture their children's talents but rather deviate them towards what they think is best for them? Why so much emphasis on white collar jobs (8-5) and not those talents?I believe that if you love doing something then you devote your time and energy towards it and thus do your best at it.
DEEJAYING
When I cleared high school years ago my dreams were to become a deejay, a model or own a fashion house with my sister.Back then there were no female deejays.I remember I used to look up to DJ Pinye and DJ John of Homeboyz.I begged my dad to enroll me to Homeboyz Academy but he could not understand why I wanted to do that and I had initially wanted to do Mass Communication. And so I didn't enroll for the course but came to Nairobi to do a Mass Communication course instead. After all, being a TV presenter was a prestigious job!People would see me on TV! And so my dream of becoming a deejay went with the wind.Time passed and my deejaying passion waned (but I will still have a turntable in my house one day). I didn't become a TV presenter either.

MODELING
Back then I didn't know of any model scouts or models for that matter. So I did not pursue modeling but rather did white collar jobs for sometime.I used to wait for Saturday and Sunday newspapers to see the latest trends and news. I had this neighbor though whose husband was a friend from high school and she kept on telling me to try modeling. She told me her brother worked with Mrs. Alice Kamunge (she of Vera Beauty College) but we never got to meet then. Her brother is the renowned Tony Chirah of Kenya Modeling Fraternity. We did meet eventually years later but sadly at my friend's funeral. That's how I entered the modeling world albeit not as a model but as a member of his organizing team.I immensely enjoyed those modeling events we did among them Samantha Bridal shows which are held yearly. Our job was to recruit and train the models and take care of them and their needs during the entire running of the shows.I did eventually get to walk the runway in two shows: this one and another during that period.I had to move on though since I was not making good money.
THE BIRTH OF MY BABY CHANILA
I remember my grandma didn't like it when we wore pants. She said they exposed too much.I guess she meant they outlined the contours of one's body.My parents didn't have an issue though but since we visited grandma at her place like every day, we didn't wear them much.I remember I used to envy those who would wear them.So the first thing I did when I came to Nairobi was get rid of dresses that I owned.I started shopping at Gikomba Market as soon as I came to Nairobi. My first purchases were a pair of denims @ Kshs.100 each.I remember I had these cute pair of turquoise jeggings with zipper details that I loved to pair with a grey long sleeved shirt and block heels that my father bought me.Most are the times that I have bought something only for it to be altered to my liking.
The entrepreneurial bug hit me without even me knowing it.I had requested my sister one time where she got her clothes from and she directed me to this wonderful woman who has since been my supplier for stock at Chanila, my online store on facebook. I call her Mama Price because her stuff is good.I have shopped from her ever since. The idea of selling clothes came to me after several months of shopping from her and people asking where I got my stuff from.
I love that my love for fashion is making me money.I do not get bored and always look forward to going for new stock and selling to people who want to feel and look good and who appreciate a good bargain.Through this business I have also been able to meet wonderful people.I even went back to school to learn on how to run a business and while there made friends and got even more clients. Most of my dreams have come true and now I have even more dreams;like turning my love for hair into a money making business.
What is your dream?
Xoxo
