Series Galore

I have been a fan of movies and series for a long time. I used to love the Bold and the Beautiful (my mum used to warn us not to watch but my dad would insist on us watching), Wild Rose, A Escrava Isaura, Acapulco Bay and many more. I remember TV sets were in black and white then and when my dad first bought a colored TV set (thereby making us the first to own one in our estate) I was overjoyed. This meant you would see the colors of those wazungus and what they were wearing! Furthermore, it also meant cartoons were even more fun to watch and my estate mates would come to watch TV at our house! I still cannot forget me and my friends mimicking Brooke Logan, Caroline Forester, Ridge Forester. Man I miss those days!

So now TV has evolved. We have more local programs and even more of foreign. The main ones being from Mexico and Phillipines. The Mexican series are mainly aired between 8-9pm and then 10-11pm while the Phillipines ones are aired at 6-7pm. This is everyday! The translation is done in such BAD English that I sometimes feel like sending them a dictionary only that they shot the programs a few years ago and thus I cannot do anything about it. But I do not watch all of them. I tend to watch the ones that come after the 9pm news bulletin.

I thank the one who invented the internet as without it I would not have known of programs that I have come to love. I have a myriad of them that I watch and follow like a bee to honey. Here's a few:

1. SCANDAL

Scandal is an American political thriller television series starring Kerry Washington. Created by Shonda Rhimes (Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice it debuted on ABC on April 5, 2012. Its currently in the second season.

Synopsis:
Olivia has left her role as White House Communications Director for the President to start her own crisis management firm. She is a professional 'fixer' who makes problems go away before anyone even knows they exist.

My Take: I just watched the current episode (E07) and I am hooked head and sinker with this one. The suspense, the acting is beyond what I expected. To top it all, the leading role is a black woman Ms. Kerry Washington who delivers quite beautifully. Just saying!

2. THE GOOD WIFE
The Good Wife Poster

The Good Wife is an American television legal drama that premiered on CBS on September 22, 2009. The series was created by Robert King and Michelle King. Stars Julianna Margulies, Josh Charles, and Chris Noths. It's currently on it's fourth season.

Synopsis:
Alicia has been a good wife to her husband, a former state attorney. After a very humiliating sex and corruption scandal, he is behind bars. She must now provide for her family and returns to work as a litigator in a law firm.

My take: I love that you just do not know what is going to happen. Good acting and I love the wardrobe especially Alicia Florrick's (played by Julianna Margulies). Damn!

3. GAME OF THRONES
Game of Thrones title card.jpg

Game of Thrones is an American medieval fantasy television series created for the U.S. channel HBO by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. It is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin's series of fantasy novels, the first of which is titled A Game of Thrones. Filmed in a Belfast studio and on location elsewhere in Northern Ireland, Malta, Croatia, Iceland, and Morocco, it premiered on HBO in the United States on 17 April 2011. The third season premiers next year March 31st.

Synopsis:
The series, set in the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos at the end of a decade-long summer, interweaves several plot lines. The first follows the members of several noble houses in a civil war for the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms; the second covers the rising threat of the impending winter and the mythical creatures of the North; the third chronicles the attempts of the exiled last scion of the realm's deposed dynasty to reclaim the throne. Through its morally ambiguous characters, the series explores issues of social hierarchy, religion, civil war, sexuality, crime and punishment.
Highly anticipated since its early stages of development, Game of Thrones has received universal acclaim by critics, although its use of nudity has been criticized. The series has won numerous awards and nominations

My Take: Blood, betrayal and triumph of evil (the good guys always end up dead). There's no telling how things will end (unless you read the book itself). What I like about it is the suspense and the reality in it (that no man is immortal). Whether good or bad when death does come for you you are gone. It doesn't matter if you are the star of the show.

4. HOMELAND
 Homeland Poster

Homeland is a drama/thriller series developed for American television by Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa, and based on the Israeli series Hatufim (English title: Prisoners of War) created by Gideon Raff.[1][2] The series stars Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison, a Central Intelligence Agency officer, and Damian Lewis as Nicholas Brody, a U.S. Marine.

The series is broadcast in the U.S. on the cable channel Showtime, and is produced by Fox 21. It premiered on October 2, 2011.
My Take: I have been glued to this thriller since it started. With the Second season almost over (3 more episodes to go) and gearing up to Season Three, this is a series I never miss. I did not expect it to turn this way but i like it!

Falling Skies Poster

Falling Skies is an American science fiction dramatic television series created by Robert Rodat and produced by Steven Spielberg. Stars Maxim Knight, Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood.

Synopsis:
Survivors of an alien attack on earth gather together to fight for their lives and fight back.

My take: There seems to be a lot of these 'end of the world' flicks lately. Ever since Flash Forward and many others. Anything that has Spielberg on it, I watch. I am never disappointed and am still waiting for Season 3 which is due next year.

6. SPARTACUS
Spartacus: Vengeance Poster

Spartacus was a Thracian leader of the slaves in the Third Servile War, a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic. Little is known about Spartacus beyond the events of the war, and surviving historical accounts are sometimes contradictory and may not always be reliable. All sources agree that he was a former gladiator and an accomplished military leader.
Spartacus' struggle, interpreted by some as an example of oppressed people fighting for their freedom against a slave-owning oligarchy, has been an inspiration to many political thinkers. It has also been featured in literature, television, and film.

Synopsis:
The story of history's greatest gladiator unfold with graphic violence and explicit sex.

My take: Not for the faint hearted. There's blood, sweat, and oh so the ancient perverted English they speak. And how can I forget the explicit sex and carved out men (yeah their six packs look carved)? Too bad the next season (3) will be the last.

7. THE VAMPIRE DIARIES

The Vampire Diaries is a supernatural drama television series developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, based on the book series of the same name written by L. J. Smith. The series premiered on The CW Television Network on September 10, 2009. It's in its fourth season.

Synopsis:
THE VAMPIRE DIARIES is the story of two vampire brothers, obsessed with the same girl, in a small town where supernatural beings live in secret amongst its residents.

Sam has been running from her past her entire life but when she returns to Byzantium, the organisation that employs her, and begins to pursue her pursuer, she will discover the only way to escape that past... is to confront it.
